The 2017 Queen’s Beast Silver Dragon coin is the third 2 oz. silver coin in the series of ten majestic coins to be struck by the prestigious British Royal Mint.
The Queen’s Beast Dragon coin includes the image of the Red Dragon of Wales, originally used by Owen Tudor, the grandfather of Henry VII. The coat of arms supported on the reverse of the coin was used by the last native Prince of Wales, Llywelyn ap Grufford.
At the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen, ten heraldic beasts stood guard. The Queen’s Beasts, sculpted by James Woodford RA for the coronation ceremony held in Westminster Abbey in 1953, stand six feet tall. They include the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III, the White Greyhound of Richmond, the Yale of Beaufort, the Red Dragon of Wales, the White Horse of Hanover, the White Lion of Mortimer, the Unicorn of Scotland, the Black Bull of Clarence, and the Falcon of the Plantagenets.
These legendary creatures symbolize the various elements of royal ancestry brought together in a young woman about to be crowned queen. These majestic creatures still border the bridge over the moat at King Henry VIII Hampton Court Palace.
Today, The Queen’s Beasts can be found at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec.
